Irving Martin Self-Advocacy Award

To receive nomination information, please send us an

email with "2009 Irving Martin" in the subject line to

 act@selfadvocacy.org.

The Irving Martin Self-Advocacy Award is given to an individual or group who has

shown their commitment to promoting self-advocacy. This award is given in memory of

the late Irving Martin “the Godfather of self-advocacy,” who was known for his endless

work on behalf of the self-advocacy movement. Irving Martin understood that people

with disabilities are people first, deserving the same opportunities as everyone else. He

had the innate ability to share his vision with others. His message was simple --- all

people belong in the community working together to create better lives and training

self-advocates across the nation to their role in creating change.

WINNER of 2007 AWARD:

Heidi Myhre is well known within the disability community as a teacher, speaker,

advocate, activist, friend, and leader.  It is not unusual to find her testifying at the

Capitol, presenting at conferences and workshops, actively participating on various

committees and workshops, participating in the Getting Out the Vote Drive, etc.  As the

person who nominated stated, " If leadership and knowledge about disability and

services was something you could bottle up and sell, Heidi's picture would be on the

bottle".  In the spirit of the Irving Martin Award, Heidi has truly made a significant

difference in the lives of persons with disabilities.  Congratulations Heidi!
