Hey, Guess What? There’s No Fat Left to Cut!

[SARN Memo for April 15, 2009]

Times are hard. Most states are short of money. That means our services may get cut.

We have to speak up loudly. Do you have a rally planned at the state capitol? If so, why not go prepared to lead a few chants? That’s what leadership is about: stepping forward to take action! Here is a list of rally chants you can use.

1. Nine Chants

  1. When I say equality, you say yes!
When I say equality, you say yes!
    Equality……YES!
    Equality……YES!
(Note: leader says lower case, crowd says ALL CAPS)

    Other words to use:

When I say justice, you say for all
When I say nothing about us, you say without us
When I say it’s time, you say for change
  2. Hey, guess what?
There’s no fat left to cut!
  3. The people, united,
    Will never be divided.
  4. Yah, sure, you bet.
    Save the safety net.
  5. When human rights are under attack,
    Whadda we do? FIGHT BACK!
(Note: leader says lower case, crowd says ALL CAPS)
(Change out “human rights” with “PCA services,” “dignity,” etc.)
  6. It’s simple and short.
    We direct our own supports.
  7. Wanna know what makes us nervous?
Cut 85 mill in PCA service.
  8. Wanna know what the fuss is?
    We’re standing up for justice!
  9. One, two, three, four –
    Equality’s what we’re fighting for!
    Five, six, seven, eight –
Our rights are not up for debate!

2. Group Activity

At your next meeting, choose one or two of these chants and invite members to practice leading them (you’ll have to work through them a bit to get a feel for the rhythm). Then go to your next rally at the state capitol. Tell the planners you want to lead a couple of chants. Find out where you need to be and when you need to be there. Then go lead the chants. It’s a great way to get our message out. It’s also fun.
