[SARN Memo for September 24, 2009]
Many self-advocates want to own their own homes. Last winter, Congress passed a law to help people buy homes. They give $8,000 to anyone who buys a home before December 1st of this year.
Here’s a question: Does anyone know any self-advocates who got this help? Or are trying to get it? The clock is ticking. Let’s get this money flowing our way.
There are lots of places on the Internet that explain the details. Here’s one.
Here’s a fun visual exercise from a book on human rights. In this activity, people learn about the basic human right to live where they choose and how they choose. They notice what support they need and name what stands in their way.
It looks like this: People silently look over a number of photos showing a variety of living situations. Each person chooses one that shows something he or she wants. Then each person talks about supports he or she needs to get it, and what, if anything, stands in the way. Download the PDF (free) and try the exercise (on pages 19-21).
We Have Human Rights
This human rights handbook, containing the above exercise, is written for people with developmental disabilities. They can use it to learn about their rights and tell others about these rights. You can order full-color hardcopies at bulk discount.

(The answer will be published in the next Memo.)
